Helping Young Adults Exchange Ideas

NuWave Solutions in Newark, NJ focuses on creating an environment where young adults can express themselves and learn to think critically. Our mission is to help our youth become responsible, productive and well-informed adults. Over the course of this year's AP sociology class, our debate team focused on two main topics: "Are Current Gun Control Laws Effective?" and "Can News Media Be Trusted?". Students chose their own topics and were randomly assigned to present arguments for both sides. Students had to prepare an argument together and were graded as a team.
Promoting Open Discussion
When we think of a debate, many might believe this is another word for an argument, but this is not the case. A debate is supposed to facilitate a discussion - not focusing on right or wrong, but the culmination of different factors and perspectives. Why is a debate team important? Students learn to be:
- Professional - We always give others room to talk and share their thoughts
- Open-minded - It's vital to stay unbiased and accepting of counterarguments
- Well-researched - We focus on facts and data, not just opinions
Our students engaged in a fruitful debate during our AP sociology class, listened to each other's statements and were encouraged to share their own ideas.
